LPN1
Starting July 1, the University of Minnesota will offer a genetic test for the LPN1 gene mutation. When you have your Leonberger tested, you will receive results that tell you if your Leo is affected (has 2 copies of the LPN1 gene mutation/DD in the example); at risk (has 1 copy of the LPN1 mutation/DN in the example); or is clear of the mutation and has the normal gene (N in the example). The DNs are classified as "at risk" instead of "carrier" because they may also develop a less severe form of LPN later in life.
Many people are already receiving test results because their Leonberger's DNA sample was at the University for research purposes.

If you would like to see the original release of information from the University of Minnesota and the University of Bern or the FAQ from the Leonberger Health Foundation, please let me know and I can send them to you (or you can find them in the archives of this list).
The research is continuing at both universities to define other forms of LPN, but we are so excited to have this LPN1 genetic test--a new tool to help breed healthy Leonbergers!
